The Senate has gone into a closed door session to take a position on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
President Muhammadu Buhari had denied assent to the electoral bill, citing cost, security and other concerns.
The president was said to have asked the National Assembly to remove the controversial clause on direct primaries from the bill and return the proposed law to him for assent.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed on Monday that Buhari had sent the letter to the National Assembly.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced on Tuesday that the upper chamber would go into a closed session after taking the opening prayers at the chamber.
The lawmakers are expected to take a position on the bill during the closed session.
The senators have the right to either stop action on the bill, or recall and pass it with a two-thirds majority.
