The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will release a “revised timetable” in order to comply with the Electoral Act 2026 as regards schedules for the 2027 elections.
Spokesperson to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, Adedayo Oketola, who stated this, was however, not forthcoming with specific on the date for the release.
Oketola said the commission was going to to abide by the laws of the land, while responding to the demand of some political parties for the release of a new timetable.
He said the matter was receiving attention, adding that “the recently released time-table by INEC was done in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Section 28 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
“The commission will review the new Electoral Act 2026. After this, a revised timetable should be released.”
Parties recently demanded for a fresh timetable in the light of the new electoral act.
They said it was essential for them to organise primaries and other internal activities ahead of the polls.
INEC on Friday last week said the presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on February 20, 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly polls were scheduled for March 6, 2027.
