A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has advised the National Assembly not to override President Muhammadu Buhari over the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
Speaking during a Citizens’ Town Hall meeting on Electoral Bill 2021 organised by Yiaga Africa and development partners in Abuja, Jega urged the legislators to do the needful by giving political parties the option to choose from.
He said the new bill holds a lot of promises that could enhance the country’s electoral integrity unlike the previous ones, adding that he National Assembly should ensure that the bill gets its good tidings.
“With the way the provisions of the bill stand, the National Assembly should do the needful, rather than contemplating overriding the President by removing the contentious provision,” he noted.
He said it is critical to give INEC the law to improve on his preparations ahead of the 2023 general elections.
