The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Liman, has cautioned Bello El-Rufai, the son of the previous Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, against issuing threats and intimidating the House concerning the investigation into his father’s eight-year tenure.
Expressing concern, Mr Liman stated that Bello, a member of the House of Representatives (Kaduna North, APC), had sent insulting and subtly threatening messages to him via WhatsApp regarding the probe into his father’s administration.
These remarks were conveyed in a statement released to journalists on Wednesday by the Speaker’s Media Aide, Malam Suraj Bamalli.
Following the establishment of a committee to examine financial transactions, loans, grants, and project implementation from 2015 to 2023 during Governor El-Rufai’s tenure, the State House of Assembly has taken note of Bello El-Rufai’s alleged social media posts and tweets insinuating confrontation and disrespect toward the entire Legislative Arm of Government.
The Assembly wishes to address Honorable Bello El-Rufai’s erratic and undisciplined behavior.
“Shortly after the committee’s formation to scrutinize financial dealings from 2015 to 2023, Honorable Bello El-Rufai took to social media with now-deleted tweets implying a call to ‘fight’ and showing disrespect toward the entire Legislative Arm of Government.
“Additionally, he sent insulting and subtly threatening messages to the Rt. Honorable Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Honorable Yusuf Liman, via WhatsApp.
“The screenshots of these tweets and messages have caused concern among the citizens of Kaduna State. It is disheartening that a Federal Lawmaker, entrusted with representing the people, would resort to such behavior, attempting to obstruct the lawful functions of the State Assembly,” the statement reads.
The Speaker emphasized that threats and intimidation from any quarter, including federal lawmakers, would not deter the State Assembly from its mission to ensure justice and accountability.
He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and providing checks and balances in Kaduna State.
He urged the people of Kaduna State to remain vigilant and unwavering in their support for transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly, he affirmed, will continue to prioritize the welfare of the state and its citizens.
The Speaker reiterated the Assembly’s steadfast commitment to serving without bias or fear, emphasizing that its members have sworn to uphold the integrity of their office and fulfill their duties diligently, regardless of any attempts at intimidation or threats.
