An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Assistant Superintendent Salisu Sahabi, gunned down by suspected Internet fraudsters (Yahoo boys) in Onitsha, Anambra State, has been buried.
The body of the slain officer was taken to his hometown of Sokoto and was buried according to Muslim rites.
The incident happened on Friday when the anti-graft officials, on a mission to arrest a group of internet fraudsters, were ambushed.
Other EFCC officials sustained varying degrees of injuries, it was learned.
Sources said the EFCC operatives had travelled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu to Anambra for the mission.
“The incident happened Friday morning. The suspected Internet fraudsters suddenly opened fire on the EFCC operatives, on noticing their presence.
“In the process, they shot one officer dead instantly, while another who was critically injured was rushed to a nearby hospital and still remained in critical condition at the hospital as of Friday night,” a source told The Punch.
Mr Sahabi had recently completed a promotional examination before his death.
The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident, saying investigation has begun.
“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody while the arm has been recovered,” he said.
