The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, over an alleged N700 billion fraud.
Mr Emmanuel was arrested and quizzed at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Abuja on Tuesday.
He served as Akwa Ibom governor between 2015 and 2023 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The former governor’s arrest was following a petition by a civil society organisation called NACAT.
The petitioners claimed that Mr Emmanuel got N3 trillion from the Federation Account over eight years but left behind a debt burden of N500 billion, and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion.
