Distance learning: KASU to partner with University of London

Commissioner of Education, Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo, has disclosed that Kaduna State will accelerate the transition of the education system to a technology-driven and a globally competitive sector.

Prof Sambo said that Kaduna State Government sent a high-powered team of intellectuals to the 2026 edition of Research in Distance and E-Learning (RIDE) Conference, which held at the University of London.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner said that the Kaduna State delegation which comprised five professors, engaged with ‘’global experts in digital, blended, and distance education.’’

He further said that the delegation had ‘’engagement with the University of London Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE), a leading global hub, where it showcased the research presentation of Kaduna State University (KASU).’’

According to the Commissioner, a high-level engagement with CODE opened pathways for institutional partnership between KASU and University of London, to ‘’build capacity in digital and distance learning.’’

The Commissioner revealed that Kaduna State Government will soon enter a formal Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between KASU and University of London to strengthen Online and Distance Education.

According to him, a pilot a Central Learning Management System (LMS) will be deployed at Kaduna State University as a model for scale-up, adding that ‘’some academics will be trained in digital pedagogy and course delivery.’’

 

Prof Sambo disclosed that ‘’the two institutions will conduct joint Research and Academic Exchange programmes, with CODE providing technical Support for digital learning infrastructure.’’

He noted that the conference validated ongoing reforms in the Kaduna State education sector, particularly the expansion of hybrid and CBT-based assessment systems.

The Commissioner also said that RIDE commended the strengthening of Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority(KSSQAA) through digital tools and the drive toward equitable access via technology-enabled learning.

The statement also noted the efforts to reach ‘’out-of-school children through flexible and distance learning models Global best practice, confirming that blended learning and centralized digital platforms are now standard.’’

The seven-member Kaduna State delegation that went to the RIDE conference include Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo, the President of Nigerian Academy of Science, Vice Chancellor of KASU, Prof Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa and Professor Bello Ayuba, the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Uba Sani.

Others are Prof. Yusha’u Ango, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KASU, Prof. Usman Abubakar Zaria, the Director-General of KSSQAA and Dr. Fatima Shehu Kabir – Director, Institute of Education, Kaduna State University.
