The Kano State Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) has said the alleged corruption case involving Murtala Sule Garo was concluded in 2024.
The commission was reacting to reports circulating in some online media suggesting a recent court ruling in a corruption case involving the former commissioner for local government in the state.
In a statement issued by the JSC’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Barrister Baba Jibo, the Commission said the case is not a new development as portrayed, but an earlier judgment that has been misrepresented.
The JSC explained that a High Court sitting on Miller Road in Kano had dismissed allegations of bribery and corruption against the former Commissioner and five others.
Adding that the case, with suit number K/133C/2024, was presided over by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji, who ruled in favour of the defendants after upholding arguments by their counsel that due process was not followed in the investigation before charges were filed.
The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) had filed the suit against Garo, alongside Muhammad Sule Garo, Mustaha Sule Garo, Isah Musa Kera, MJ Multipurpose Services Ltd, and A.U. Future Investment Ltd, on allegations bordering on fraud.
However, the JSC expressed concern that some online platforms reported the case as a fresh ruling delivered on Tuesday, prompting the need for clarification.
The Commission urged journalists and media organisations to verify information before publication to avoid misleading the public and creating unnecessary confusion.
Mr Garo has been recently tipped as a likely successor to former Kano state deputy governor Comrade Abdussalam who resigned recently.
