The Kano State Government has rejected allegations of betrayal and backstabbing levelled against it by the NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
This is coming hours after Mr Kwankwaso accused Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of betrayal and backstabbing as the former perfects plans to ditch the NNPP for the ruling APC.
Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Wata, has described defection as a routine political calculation rather than betrayal.
In a local radio interview monitored in Kano, Mr Waiya said the betrayal narrative was being exaggerated, stressing that political decisions are often shaped by strategy and evolving realities.
He said discussions around party alignment should not be misinterpreted as personal disloyalty.
He explained that considerations about remaining in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) or aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC) go beyond party names and are focused on individuals and the wider interest of Kano State.
He noted that Governor Yusuf’s personality and leadership style would remain unchanged regardless of party affiliation.
The commissioner insisted that there was no breakdown in the relationship between Governor Yusuf and Senator Kwankwaso, whom he described as the political leader of the movement.
He maintained that both leaders remain united and that attempts to portray cracks in their relationship were unfounded.
Mr further clarified that the conversation about a possible return to the APC did not originate from the governor, instead it emerged from sustained appeals by political actors and stakeholders across the state, including those at the local government level.
According to him, these stakeholders collectively engaged both the governor and Kwankwaso, arguing for what they believed to be the most viable political path for the state.
He added that such widespread consultations could not be dismissed as careless or ill-informed.
The commissioner emphasised that political choices must ultimately be guided by the collective interest of the people of Kano State, not emotions or assumptions.
