The number of those killed by bandits in some communities in Bakori and Kankara local government areas of Katsina State has risen to 84.
When the bandits struck on Thursday, it was reported that no fewer than 41 members of vigilante group and residents were killed and an unspecified number were injured when the terrorists laid in Kankara Local Government Area of the state.
Residents of the affected communities revealed on Friday that 58 people were killed, that they were expecting more corpses as others were still missing.
It was learnt that those killed reportedly went into the bush to recover cattle rustled by terrorists who had earlier launched an attack on the community.
Sources the terrorists had been informed I advance of the coming of the people and with that swooped on the vigilante members through Bakori, where they had already laid ambush for them, killing scores of them.
According to information available on Saturday, 84 people were killed by bandits between the Kankara-Bakori axis in Katsina State.
Twenty six more corpses were recovered on Saturday evening by security operatives and some volunteers after combing the scene of the killings.
An eyewitness revealed on Sunday that he saw a vehicle at Yargoje junction moving 26 more orpses to Bakori communities.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government has said it will inaugurate a commission of inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the killings.
The special adviser to Governor Aminu Bello Masari on security matters, Ibrahim Ahmed-Katsina, who revealed this in Katsina, said the government would also come to aid of families of the victims.
The state Police spokesperson, SP Gambo Isah said operations were ongoing in the affected areas, therefore cannot give any update.
“As soon as I get the update from our operatives, I will get across to update you, but for the time being, operation is ongoing in the area and we don’t have that update,” he said.
