A Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) patrol van has killed six people and injured several others while chasing a suspected smuggler in Jibia, a border town in Katsina state.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the accident occurred Monday morning when the van allegedly lost control and rammed into bystanders, killing six people on the spot.
Malam Kamale Jibia, a trader told our reporter that angry youths have already burnt down the NCS Hilux van.
He said the “while pursuing a suspected smuggler in J5 Peugeot, the Customs official vehicle lost control and killed six people in Jibia town.”
He said several others who recorded various degrees of injuries have been taken to the General Hospital in Jibia.
Kamale said “immediately they (customs officers) saw what happened, they jumped out of their vehicle and ran for their lives. Some angry youths set the vehicle ablaze and started protesting.”
The spokesperson of NCS command in Katsina, Danbaba Isa, said the accident was not deliberate.
