Two hundred and sixteen people have died due to cholera outbreaks across 34 local government areas in Katsina State, the state Commissioner for Health, Yakubu Nuhu Danja, has said.
Danja who disclosed this during an emergency preparedness and response committee meeting on Wednesday said 7,566 cases have been recorded so far across the state.
“Since the beginning of the outbreak, there have been many programmes and efforts by the state government and other stakeholders in order to ensure that the issue has been addressed,” he said.
Danja said 1,617 cases were recorded in Funtua local government with 32 deaths, while 359 cases were recorded in Jibia with 24 deaths, adding that Sabuwa has 343 suspected cases with four deaths.
“Over 345 samples were collected with 157 tested positive. But we’ve activated our Cholera emergency operation center and rapid response teams were deployed and active case search is ongoing,” he said.
“We’ve also procured drugs and ORS which were distributed across the state. Our health care staffers have also been retrained,”
The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Shamsudeen Yahaya, said the agency has been enlightening the public on the danger of using contaminated water.
