Chad’s Military Council on Monday named Albert Pahimi Padacke as Prime Minister of a transitional government.
Padacke was runner-up in Chad’s April 11 presidential election.
His appointment is coming a week after President Idriss Deby died from battlefield wounds, after winning the country’s presidential election.
Deby’s son, Mahmat Idriss Deby, a four-star general, was named leader of the military council shortly after the military took over, to oversee an 18-month transition to elections.
Opposition politicians have called the military takeover a “coup”, and said on Monday that the army had no right to pick a premier.
Padacke, believed to be one of Idriss Deby’s allies, was the country’s prime minister from 2016 to 2018.
Despite running against Deby, Padacke came second with 10.3 percent of the vote in the April 11 election.
Leader of the Reformist Party, Yacine Abderamane, told Reuters he would not accept Padacke’s nomination.
“It is not up to the transitional military council to designate a prime minister in this isolated manner. We want there to be talks between political parties, civil society and other actors in order to reach a consensus,” he said.
