The Presidency says President Muhammadu Buhari didn’t transmit power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo because it was unwarranted, since Buhari isn’t going to spend up to 21 days outside Nigeria.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this on Tuesday during a television interview.
Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom on Tuesday afternoon for a “routine” medical check-up, after the National Security Council meeting.
The President’s absence in the country without officially transmitting power to the Vice President has raised criticism in some quarters, especially the main opposition party in the country.
But Shehu said: “He (Buhari) will continue from wherever he is. The requirement of the law is that if the President is going to be absent in the country for 21 days and more, then that transmission is warranted. In this particular instance, it is not warranted,” he said.
“It is a medical trip and there is absolutely no urgency, no emergency; the President is not in any sick condition.”
