The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday, said President Muhammadu Buhari would soon sign the electoral amendment bill into law.
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill contains direct primaries for all political parties.
The speaker expressed optimism that the president would support the conduct of direct primaries by political parties as suggested by lawmakers.
He said President Buhari has been a product of direct primaries because of his popularity, noting that direct primaries opens up the political space for the youths to participate.
He said the indirect primaries has not helped the growth of democracy in the country.
The governors have been vehement in their opposition against the bill, while urging the president not to sign it into law because of the clause that mandates political parties to conduct direct primaries in selecting candidates.
However, the lawmakers support direct primaries in the believe that it would check the power of the governors to determine who emerges candidate for elective offices in states.
