Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has died, the Tanzanian government announced on Wednesday evening.
He died at the age of 61, the country’s vice-president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, announced on state television.
Hassan said Magafuli died from heart complications at a hospital in Dar es Salaam.
She said there would be 14 days of national mourning and flags would fly at half mast.
The late Magufuli was a rabid COVID-19 denier. He was not seen in public for 18 days and rumours had swept the country that he was very sick, until his death was confirmed on Wednesday.
