A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammad Lawal Uwais, is dead.
He died on Friday in Abuja after a protracted illness.
The former CJN died six days to his 89 birthday.
The former CJN died in the early hours of Friday, according to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr Kayode Ajulo.
He served as CJN from 1995 to 2006.
After retiring from the Supreme Court, Justice Uwais chaired a Presidential Electoral Reform Committee inaugurated by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The panel submitted a report on 11 December 2008 with recommendations that included establishing commissions to deal with Electoral Offences, Constituency Delimitation and Political Parties Registration and Regulation.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais was called to the Bar at Middle Temple in London in 1963.
He began his legal journey as a State Counsel in the Northern Region and rose to become a Justice of the Supreme Court in 1979.
