Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
This is a move that signals a major shake-up in the state’s political landscape.
The governor’s resignation was confirmed in a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Yusuf formally communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area.
The resignation takes effect from January 25, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for offering him the platform that led to his emergence as governor and for the support he enjoyed from party leaders and members across Kano State.
He noted that his decision to leave the party followed prolonged internal turmoil, marked by leadership conflicts and unresolved legal disputes that have continued to destabilize the NNPP at both state and national levels.
The governor explained that these challenges had weakened party unity and alienated many members, creating divisions he described as increasingly difficult to mend. According to him, the persistent crises have also generated uncertainty within the party’s structure nationwide.
Yusuf said his decision was reached after deep reflection and was guided primarily by his responsibility to safeguard the interests of Kano State and its people. He emphasized that the move was taken without bitterness and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity and the overall development of the state.
The statement further revealed that the governor’s exit from the NNPP was not an isolated move. Also resigning their membership are 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged and expressed regret over the development, Zubairu said the party had no option but to accept the governor’s decision, describing Yusuf as one of the NNPP’s most impactful leaders.
However, the statement didn’t mentioned which political party the governor will be joining after his resignation.
