Officers of the Nigerian Customs Services have fired at the official vehicle of the Katsina State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Yau Umar Gwajo Gwajo.
Mr. Gwajo Gwajo, a two time speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, was reportedly attacked on his way from his home town Mai Adua to Katsina metropolis.
This is coming barely a month after officers of the service killed six people and wounded several others in Jibia.
Governor Aminu Bello Masari had lambasted the “impunity” of some officers of the service when a team from the Customs headquarters visited him over the accident in Jibia.
An eye witness, Basiru Usman, said the commissioner was attacked by the officers a few kilometers from Katsina metropolis.
“He was attacked immediately after Muduru village. People were scared as the shooting started because we thought it was the bandits. But the vehicle (Gwajo Gwajo) was not even running,” the source said.
Spokesperson of the ministry, Abdurahman Sama’ila, confirmed the story to 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE in Katsina but didn’t give details.
“Appropriate authorities have been informed of the development but there are no serious wounds on any of our people,” he said.
Danbaba Isa, the Customs spokesperson in Katsina command didn’t respond to calls and SMS sent to him.
