An SS2 student of Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology Maiduguri, Umar Goni, has slit the throat of an 11-year-old junior student of the college, Jibrin Sadi Ramadan.
The junior student, Jbrin, is currently on admission at the intensive care unit of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Sources said the victim was being punished by the senior student for refusing to run errands for him.
A source at the school said, “The senior colleague, from SS2 class, had sent Jbrin on an errand, but he didn’t go. That fateful night, he came to pick him up and took him to a quiet place where he used a razor blade to severely cut his neck, injuring most of his arteries, nerves and trachea.”
The assailant, whose name has been concealed by the school management, reportedly left the victim for dead with his body soaked in blood.
It was reported that minutes later, Jibrin struggled and took himself to the Principal’s Office, where he finally broke down and became unconscious.
The perpetrator, who was said to be indoctrinated on psychotropic substances, was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for further investigations.
The incident, it was learned, occurred on Saturday 16 January 2022 but the school management concealed it with the aim of keeping it away from the public.
The victim is said to be the son of late Justice Sadi Mato of Federal High Court Kano State, while his mother, Hajiya Aisha, remarried a senior civil servant with the Yobe State government.
Aisha’s new husband, (Jibrin’s stepfather), who was called by the school management shortly after the incident, has been discouraging the victim and his mother from reporting the attack.
Alhaji Nasiru Mato, an uncle of the victim, said, “From our own findings, one SS2 student known as Fairoz dragged our child behind their dormitory and used razor blade to cut his throat from different angles.
“Our son eventually fainted and the culprit ran away, thinking that the child was already dead… We received a distress call from the school management on Wednesday morning on the development and we rushed to Maiduguri Teaching hospital and found our child in a sorry state. At the moment, he is surviving on tracheostomy even as the doctors said it is difficult for him regain his voice after having some of his veins cut.
“We demand proper medical attention for the child, the school and law enforcement must also take necessary measures to investigate and prosecute the perpetrator.”
Mr Mato also said the family is not satisfied with the way the school management is handling the matter.
He said the school only told them that the culprit is under police custody but refused to speak much about his identity.
There is no official comments from the college yet over the incident.
