Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, on Monday, issued a 72-hour notice to articulated vehicles to find alternative routes to enable reconstruction of Paiko-Lapai road to begin.
Bello issued the directive in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Muhammad Idris, on Monday.
The governor said the closure was to allow contractors to begin work on the road, adding that the decision became necessary after spending so many resources on rehabilitating the road.
He said over 2,500 articulated vehicles ply the road daily, thereby reversing the gains made, which has resulted in total waste of resources.
The governor had on September 15, 2020, closed down Minna-Bida road to heavy-duty vehicles to allow for reconstruction of the road.
Also, Minna-Zungeru, Lapai-Paiko roads were closed alongside Minna-Bida road but after continuous pressure from the Federal Government with a promise to fix the Lambata-Bida road, the government
agreed to open the road.
