Residents said the bandits operating on the Zamfara – Katsina border in Yankara have killed Labiru Ahmad, the commander of vigilante group in the community Saturday morning.
Residents told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the vigilante group commander was killed after several failed attempts by the bandits.
Labiru Ahmad, known in the village as Namada, led vigilante group members and Yan Sakai on several occasions to repel bandia’ attack on the village.
“He killed a lot of them and helped the conventional security agents to arrest bandits or repel their attacks,” a youth leader, Lauwali Musa told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE over the phone on Sunday.
Narrating how Labiru was killed, A community leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons said on Friday, the vigilante group commander, as usual, led his team on surveillance around the community for several hours in the night.
“Around 03:40am, the vigilante group members as usual, decided to go home and take some rest before the morning prayers. While Labiru waited for and even escorted some of his colleagues to reach him.
“When he reached his house, unknown to him some bandits, who had been tracking him, emerged from behind his house and overpowered him,” he said.
In the community, 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE gathers that there’s a belief that Labiru was “soldiers” out by local informants.
“Informants are the reasons the conflict keeps going on. We believe someone provided information to the bandits on the movements of the vigilante group members especially Namada,” the community leader added.
Another resident of Yankara, Saddam Zayyana, said the death of Labiru Namada would be seeing as martyrdom by the residents.
“His death won’t be in vain because he lived a fulfilled life and fought for his people. He was brave person and we’ll miss him.”
The police spokesman in the state, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu didn’t respond to SMS and WhatsApp messages sent to him over the killing of the vigilante commander.
