Two weeks after killing a policeman and burning down police station and a health centre in Sayaya community of Katsina State, bandits have attacked the community again on Saturday and killed two persons and injured three others.
In Saturday’s attack, 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE gathers from residents that the bandits stormed the village around 03:15pm, shooting sporadically.
Sayaya is off the road from Kafin Soli to Matazu town, the community is enclosed by several communities battling banditry with residents alleging that the bandits’ camps are located not far from their community.
“Some of them were not even on motorcycles when they attacked us yesterday,” a resident of the community who sought anonymity for security reasons told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE over the phone on Sunday. “They live not very far from the community and the main road.”
He said the attack was possibly a continuation of “what the bandits have started”
“When the governor came the last time we were attacked, he promised some measures and we’ve seen some of them got fulfilled. We’ve seen more security agents but the community and the road from Kafin Soli to Matazu is still not safe,” another resident who also sought anonymity said.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that a notorious bandits’ leader Muhammadu known as Maha holds sway in the area. He was said to have been amongst the bandits that accepted peace deal in both Matazu and Musawa local government areas but has since reneged on the agreements.
Police spokesman in the state DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu didn’t respond to SMS and WhatsApp messages sent to him over the attack.
