Bandits have killed two people and injured seven in an attack on the Guga-Turare road in Bakori, Katsina State, on Monday.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the deceased were a man simply identified as Nura and an elderly woman who were travelling to Guga around 07:00pm. The injured victims were in the same vehicle with those killed.
Bakori is one of the most security compromised local government areas in the state. Local authorities in the area entered into a peace deal with the rampaging bandits twice but the attacks have not reduced.
“Upon sighting the car and some motorcycles on the road, the bandits opened sporadic fire which forced the driver to stop. Those on the motorcycles escaped only one of them couldn’t,” a resident of Guga, Abbas Shehu told this reporter over the phone.
He said some residents alerted the security agents in both Bakori and Guga of the attack.
A joint security team from Bakori town responded to the distress call and engaged the bandits in a gunfight for some minutes.
“The security team evacuated the injured victims to a hospital in Bakori. Four of then have referred to a hospital in Funtua because they were in critical condition,’ he said.
The victims were mostly from Guga and Kakumi villages all in Bakori area.
The police spokesman in the state, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu didn’t respond to a call and an SMS sent to him over the attack.
