An expectant mother and three other women have been kidnapped by bandits who invaded Maikadauri village in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday night.
Locals said one person was killed and a vigilante identified as Amos, who responded to assist residents while the attack was ongoing, was wounded by a gunshot to the leg during the attack.
A local of Kontagora, Habibu Mohammed, revealed that attacks on communities on the outskirts of the town have escalated despite security efforts.
He called on the government to urgently address the growing insecurity in the area.
The Kontagora attack comes a day after Sidiq Musa and Bashar Bisalla, while collecting firewood, were killed by bandits in a forest in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area.
Locals said at least seven young men who engaged in firewood collection had been killed in the same Wawa forest within the last 110 days .
The spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, was yet to respond to enquiries as hid phone line could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
