Bandits have invaded Chacho village in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, abducting several residents, including a bride-to-be hours to her wedding wedding.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE learnt that the attack took place around 1:30 a.m., deepening fears in rural communities who have experienced repeated raids.
Locals said the gunmen operated unchallenged for nearly an hour, taking away at least 11 people—mostly women and injuring one resident.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the late arrival of security operatives angered locals.
“For over an hour, we were calling and pleading for help,” a community member lamented. “It wasn’t until 2:30 a.m. that security personnel came, long after the bandits had vanished. People here no longer feel protected.”
The abducted bride-to-be and her bridesmaids were getting ready for the wedding ceremony scheduled for Sunday morning, but the festive mood was replaced by distress and uncertainty.
Residents say the latest incident highlights a growing pattern of slow or inadequate security intervention in remote villages. Many fear it may embolden criminal groups who have increasingly targeted vulnerable communities in Sokoto and neighbouring states.
Sokoto Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the attack but said details were still being compiled.
As families await updates on the whereabouts of the victims, community leaders are renewing calls for the government to urgently address persistent gaps in rural security infrastructure.
