Twelve soldiers have been killed when bandits invaded a military base located in Mutumji, Dansadau district of Zamfara State.
The base is a key site for logistics and reconnaissance in the army’s fight against bandits in the area.
AFP reports that bandits also carted away military weapons in the attack that happened on Saturday.
Zamafara State has experienced a surge in bandits activities in recent time, a situation that had forced the Federal Governmrnt to suspend telecommunication services in the state, as a non-kinetic strategic against banditry.
The state government has also shutdown cattle markets and ban sales of petrol in jerrycans.
“The attackers stormed the base around 10:30 am and engaged the troops in a fierce gun battle,” AFP quoted a security source.
“They subdued the troops and killed 12 of them. They included nine navy, a soldier and two policemen.”
Bandits have in the last two years raided many villages and kidnap for ransom thousands North west and central states geo-political zones of the country.
