Bandits on Tuesday night attacked the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kuje, Abuja, witnesses said.
This is coming hours after bandits attacked Presidential Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy in Katsina state, killing at least an Assistant Commissioner of Police and another officer
Residents of Kuje said there was serious panic as explosions and gunshots were heard around the prison surrounding.
A resident of the area, Joshua Friday, told journalists that the shootings have been ongoing for the last 20 minutes.
He said the situation has caused panic in the area.
Mr Friday said, “Currently in Kuje and the shooting has been going on for almost 20 minutes now. I can’t tell you what is happening whether it is a robbery or not but we have been hearing that gunshots repeatedly around the area the prison is located. We are all scared as I speak to you. ”
There was no immediate comment from the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar on Tuesday night.
The police spokesperson in the FCT, Josephine Adeh, couldn’t be reached for comment.
