Few days after bandits carted away bags of grains and rice sent to Gummi local government area as part of Ramadan palliative by the Zamfara State Government, a teacher has been shot dead in a Tuesday evening attack on motorists plying the Anka – Gummi – Zuru federal Highway.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE gathers that the teacher, Tukur Kurma taught History and was a senior master at the Government Day Secondary school Gummi before his death.
Several passengers were severely wounded by gunshots.
A source, Abdullahi Balarabe, said the teacher was on transit in a commercial vehicle retuning from an official assignment from Gusau when the vehicle came under attack.
“The vehicle was attacked around Tashar Taya before Daki Takwas community on the Anka – Gummi road yesterday. Some people said the vehicle ran into a bandits’ camp just near the highway but the bandits actually blocked the highway and waited for motorists.
“They tried to stop the car but the driver refused to stop and instead tried to maneuver his way from the bandits. The bandits then started shooting at the vehicle which led to Malam’s death on the spot,@ he said.
He noted that the driver didn’t stop though the vehicle was sprayed with bullets.
He added that the teacher would be buried this morning in Gummi town. Some of those who sustained injuries in the vehicle included: Sani Yandi and Muhammadu Sani (Sani Pharmacy).
The police command spokesperson, SP Mohammed Shehu, didn’t respond to calls and SMS sent to him on the attack.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that the killing of Malam Kurma came three days after a truck filled with Ramadan palliative was said to have been robbed by the bandits.
The caretaker chairman of Gummi, Abubakar Shehu, confirmed to newsmen that one of the trucks allocated to the area developed fault while on the way to Gummi.
“While the driver and his team were working to fix the fault, bandits emerged from nowhere on motorcycles. Perhaps, it was a chance meeting but the driver and his boys ran for their lives and left the loaded vehicle. The bandits didn’t take away the vehicle but they tempered with over fifty bags of grains and rice and stole some of the items. We have however recovered the remaining bags re bagged the tempered bags,” he said.
Gummi, Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas are amongst the worse hits areas in terms of bandits’ attacks in Zamfara state.
