Two senior military officers were gunned down by bandits during a daring attack inside the barracks of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Afaka, Kaduna.
A statement by the spokesperson of NDA, Major Muhammad Bashir Jajira, on Tuesday said another officer was abducted.
He said no cadet officer was harmed during the attack.
The assailants attacked the elite military facility Tuesday morning around 1am, according to security sources.
Another officer who was wounded was taken to hospital for treatment, another source said.
The NDA is located near the Kaduna International Airport, which has been the hub of bandits recently.
Multiple sources are saying that the bandits have passed through the security gate into the academy disguised in military uniforms.
They quickly proceeded to the officers’ quarters and began shooting sporadically.
Another report indicated that two officers (a Major and a Squadron Leader) were gunned down immediately.
The assailants later took away another Major through the nearby bush inside the academy.
The sound of the gunfire, however, alerted the troops of the NDA Quick Response Team, who arrived at the scene, but were unable to rescue the kidnapped officer as the bandits were already gone with the victim.
The NDA statement read thus:
“The security architecture of the Nigerian Defence Academy was compromised early this morning by unknown gunmen who gained access into the residential area within the Academy in Afaka. During the unfortunate incident, we lost two personnel and one was abducted.
“The Academy in collaboration with the 1Division Nigerian Army and Air Training Command as well as other security agencies in Kaduna state has since commenced pursuit of the unknown gunmen within the general area with a view to tracking them and rescue the abducted personnel.
“The NDA community and Cadets are safe in the Academy. We assure the general public that this unknown gunmen would soon be apprehended and the abducted personnel rescued.“
The military authorities have not spoken on the incident.
