The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for stricter conditions in the ongoing peace negotiations with repentant bandits in neighbouring Katsina State, insisting that any agreement must explicitly prohibit them from attacking communities in other states.
The monarch made the remarks during a visit to Faruruwa in the Shanono Local Government Area, one of the several border communities that have recently suffered kidnappings attacks, killings, and cattle rustling linked to bandit activities allegedly papertrated from bandits from the neighbouring Katsina state.
Emir Sanusi said his visit was aimed at reassuring residents of the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening security and safeguarding lives and properties of the innocent inhabitants of the area. While emphasizing that any peace deal that fails to protect neighbouring states from potential spillover attacks, the emir said the move would be ineffective and unlikely to bring lasting stability to the region.
The Emir also urged leaders and security agencies to work closely with affected communities to prevent further violence. He assured residents that both the traditional institution and the government remain fully committed to pursuing long-term solutions to insecurity.
Speaking to the gathering, the community representative Yahaya Bagobiri told the Emir that the community started experiencing bandits attack since April 2024 and ever since, the community has been thrown into chaos. Bagori also urged the emir and Kano state government to intensify security presence in the area permanently to deter continuation of the attack.
He thank the Emir for his concern over the plight of the people of the area adding that the area needs prayers for peaceful conduct as well as an effective security settings.
