The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Morocco on its qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Africa.
Morocco beat Canada 3-0 on Saturday to became the first African country to reach the last eight of the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
Atiku on Sunday praised the Atlas Lions for their impressive performance, saying the feat had once more raised Africa’s profile on the global football stage.
His reaction read, “Congratulations to Morocco on a deserved 3-0 victory over Canada and on becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“You have once again lifted the hopes of an entire continent and reminded the world that African football belongs on the biggest stage.”
Morocco’s last feat adds to its reputation as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
The North Africans already etched its name in history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
The country has received praises from football fans, sports administrators and political leaders across Africa, who have described the victory as another significant milestone for African football.
