Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has paid tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi who gave security cover to 262 Christians in a mosque during deadly religious and communal clashes involving 10 villages in in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Imam Abubakar had in June 2018 amidst deadly inter religious communal clashes involving 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, provided security cover for by hiding 262 Christians in a mosque and in his house until the conflict ended.
While paying the tribute, Atiku posted his verified Facebook on Friday said “Today, Nigeria mourns the loss of a remarkable patriot and exemplar of compassion.”
The former Vice President recalled that “Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, whose selfless courage during the June 2018 Plateau crisis saw him open his mosque and home to shelter and protect over 260 Christians, even at great personal risk.
“He lived a life that transcended religious divides and affirmed our shared humanity. His act of bravery not only saved hundreds of lives but also stood as a powerful testament to the truth that peace, empathy and brotherhood are the firmest foundations of national unity.
“As we grieve his passing, let us recommit to the ideals he embodied in inter-faith harmony, mutual respect, and an unwavering defence of the sanctity of every human life.”
Atiku prayed that may the soul of the Imam find peace; and may his legacy continue to inspire hope across our diverse nation”
Following this commendable feat, the late Imam was given several awards for his bravery, including the International Religious Freedom Award from the US Department of State in 2019.
Imam Abubakar died at the age 90 on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos ten days after his admission in the hospital.
He left behind 19 children including 12 boys and 7 girls.
Late Abubakar would be buried today after Jumma’at prayers in Nghar village.
