Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the killings of five soldiers by gunmen in Abia State, calling for the arrest and prosecution of the culprits.
Atiku disclosed this on his X handle on Friday, saying the Federal Government must identify the gunmen hiding under the cover of Biafra agitation to carry out attacks.
He said doing this would ensure that criminals in the South-east were separated from “legitimate agitators”.
Atiku said the impact of the sit-at-home on students sitting for West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination in the South-east would be “even more profound”.
The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections called for a political solution in the face of incessant killings under the agitations for a Biafra country.
He said the political solution should be explored so that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) can be set free.
“Without prejudice to the ongoing legal processes, I think the time has come to explore a political resolution to the Nnamdi Kanu and other associated issues.
“I believe that this will defuse the compressor cooker situation in the region. It will be a win-win for all parties,” he said.
It would be recalled that masked gunmen, on Thursday morning, ambushed and killed the soldiers in Obikabia Junction in Aba, the commercial hub of the Abia State.
The gunmen also burnt the soldiers’ patrol truck and an Army outpost, all in the name of enforcing the sit-at-home order declared by the IPOB across the South-east to mark their Biafra Day which is celebrated annually in the region.
