Following the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) long strike, several undergraduates have turned to studying other kinds of skills.
ASUU reportedly extended its strike on Monday in Abuja due Federal Government’s alleged failure to carry out the Memorandum of Action it signed.
A wide range of students said they were sick of remaining home, so they took advantage of the chance to pick up some trades.
A medical student at Lagos State University named Mr. Shola Ayeni claimed he made the decision to learn how to fix electrical devices including computers, headphones, and other devices like cell phones.
Ayeni claimed that his parents had given him a lot of support because it appeared as though the ASUU strike would never end.
According to all indications, the strike may go on for a longer period of time because neither party seems interested in reaching a solution, he said.
A political science student at the University of Abuja named Miss Veronica Ossai claimed that she chose to learn how to create shoes in order to construct her future.
She pleaded with the federal government and the union to consider the kids’ futures and find a way out of the deadlock.
“To create a common ground for agreement for the welfare of the education sector and the country at large,” Ossai urged the parties.
As the strike dragged on Mrs. Nike Oguntoye, a social science student at the University of Port Harcourt said she decided to learn how to bake to keep herself busy.
Even though she had previously expressed an interest in baking, she stated, “I utilized the strike as an opportunity to use and develop the talent.”
Oguntoye suggested that students not stay home and do nothing because the strike had continued.
They should get involved in things that would help them, she advised.
