The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its eight-month-old industrial action conditionally.
The decision to suspend the strike which has been on since February 14, was reached at a meeting of the union’s leadership that started on Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday.
In a tweet on its official handle @ASUU_NGN @3:39am on Friday, the union wrote: “Congratulations Nigerian Students. The 8-Months Strike has been suspended conditionally, Universities to reopen on Monday, the 17th October, 2022.”
The meeting was called by the union to decide a course of action after its state branches met over the Court of Appeal ruling last week.
It was gathered that the state chapters voted overwhelmingly in support of the suspension.
The Court of Appeal had ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be heard.
Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive, attended the meeting at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.
