The Nigerian Army has intensified its offensive against banditry in the North-West, rescuing 1,023 kidnapped victims and recovering 189 AK-47 rifles during operations across Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states since January.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Maj. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, disclosed this on Tuesday during the West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration at Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto.
He said the achievements were recorded by troops of the 8 Division and Sector 2 Joint Task Force, North-West, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. According to him, the operations also led to the recovery of 4,338 rounds of ammunition, 305 motorcycles and 4,123 livestock from bandits.
Maj. Gen. Ajose noted that several bandit leaders and their collaborators were neutralised, leading to a significant reduction in criminal activities and renewed confidence among residents, especially farmers.
He attributed the successes to the professionalism and commitment of officers and soldiers, as well as sustained training and the deployment of special task force units for offensive operations.
The GOC commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. W. Shaibu, for his support, and thanked the governments of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states for their cooperation.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), praised the Army’s resilience and assured continued support for security operations in the state.
