The Nigerian Army is convening an education summit in Sokoto with the aim of providing solutions to school abduction in the country.
The theme of the summit is “Education Development and National Security: Issues and the Way Forward.”
The summit was attended by prominent personalities from different walks of life, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state, Ministers of education and defence as well as commissioners of education from the northwest geopolitical zone.
Others were academics, heads of security agencies in the state, and emirs.
Speaking, Sultan Sa’ad said the summit came at the right time in view of the security challenges which were affecting the education sector in the country.
“The summit was coming at the right time because of so many challenges in the country and in our education sector where so many of our children have became victims of banditry and other security issues,” he said
It would be recalled that bandits in the northwestern states were making schools as soft targets, abducting students for ransom.
The monarch however, observed that, the problem of this world not only in Nigeria is religious extremists.
“So.many people turn religious verses upside down to suit them because they have not been properly guided on what should be the teachings, especially of the two major religions,” he said
Corroborating the position of the Sultan, Governor Tambuwal noted that the current security challenges were impacting negatively on education.
The chief of army staff, however, reassured Nigerians of their determination to protect them and their properties.
