Are Your 2025 Goals Aligned for Success?, by Abdulrauf Aliyu

As 2024 draws to a close, many of us are looking ahead to 2025, contemplating the goals and aspirations we want to achieve. However, for many, setting goals has become a routine exercise, one that is often forgotten or abandoned as the year progresses. The issue lies not in our intention to succeed but in how we approach goal-setting itself. Our goals often lack the foundation needed for success and are not aligned with a clear purpose or strategy. For 2025, we must shift our focus from mere aspirations to winning strategies—ones that are deeply rooted in purpose, are measurable, and are actionable. The path to success is not simply about setting goals; it’s about setting winning aspirations, ensuring the right capabilities are in place, and creating a management system that can sustain progress.

One effective approach to goal-setting, particularly in a world as complex and unpredictable as today’s, is the Three-Box Solution. This framework encourages us to manage the present, selectively forget the past, and create the future. These three actions work in tandem to align our goals with a broader vision, ensuring that we remain focused, adaptable, and committed to progress.

First, managing the present requires us to take stock of our current situation and the resources we have at hand. It involves reflecting on where we are today—our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. In the context of goal-setting for 2025, this means understanding the present realities of our lives, including our socio-economic conditions, work dynamics, and personal circumstances. It’s important to assess what is working and what isn’t in our lives right now. Are there aspects of our daily routines, relationships, or habits that hinder progress toward our aspirations? What resources do we currently have that can propel us forward, and how can we optimize them for maximum impact? By acknowledging the present and identifying what can be leveraged or improved, we lay a solid foundation for achieving our goals in the new year.

The second component of the Three-Box Solution is selectively forgetting the past. This doesn’t mean disregarding our past experiences or lessons learned, but rather eliminating the negative patterns and mindsets that may be holding us back. Many of us carry with us baggage from past failures, disappointments, or missed opportunities. These memories can cloud our judgment and prevent us from moving forward with clarity and confidence. In goal-setting for 2025, we need to consciously let go of what no longer serves us—be it self-doubt, toxic relationships, or outdated strategies that no longer align with our future aspirations. Selectively forgetting the past frees us to create space for new opportunities, new approaches, and a renewed sense of purpose. Without this step, we are at risk of repeating the same mistakes, which only leads to frustration and stagnation.

The third element of the Three-Box Solution is creating the future. This is the most crucial aspect of goal-setting. Once we have a clear understanding of our present situation and have freed ourselves from past limitations, we are now ready to envision the future we want to create. This step requires us to ask ourselves: What kind of life do we want to lead? What aspirations will define our success in 2025? Creating the future involves aligning our goals with a deeper sense of purpose and crafting a vision that is both inspiring and actionable. It’s not enough to have a vague idea of success; we need to articulate specific objectives that will guide our actions and decisions throughout the year. A well-defined vision of the future helps us stay on course, even when challenges arise, and provides us with a sense of direction and motivation to push forward.

Another important consideration when setting goals is the concept of “winning aspirations.” This idea shifts the focus from setting arbitrary goals to defining what it truly means to win. In the same way businesses set long-term aspirations to compete in their respective industries, we must set winning aspirations for our personal lives. A winning aspiration is more than just a goal—it’s a clear, compelling vision of what success looks like and how it will feel once achieved. For instance, rather than simply setting a goal to “earn more money” in 2025, a winning aspiration would be “to achieve financial independence while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.” Winning aspirations are focused on long-term fulfillment, not just short-term gains. They are deeply tied to our personal values and purpose, which makes them more meaningful and motivating.

To achieve winning aspirations, we must also define “how to win.” This involves understanding the strategic actions needed to reach our desired outcome. How will we approach challenges? What specific behaviors, skills, or habits must we develop to succeed? Setting clear actions and milestones is key to ensuring that our goals don’t remain vague. This means breaking down the larger aspiration into smaller, achievable tasks that we can measure and track over time. The “how to win” strategy provides us with a roadmap to follow, ensuring that our actions are aligned with our vision for success.

At the same time, we must assess the capabilities we need to achieve our winning aspirations. In business, capabilities refer to the unique strengths and resources an organization needs to succeed. Similarly, we must ask ourselves: What skills, knowledge, and resources do we need to cultivate in order to achieve our goals in 2025? Are there areas of personal development we need to focus on? Do we need to build new relationships, improve our financial literacy, or learn new technical skills? Identifying and developing these capabilities is crucial to making sure we have what it takes to succeed.

Finally, the management system is the structure that supports our ability to execute and sustain our goals. This involves setting up processes and tracking systems that keep us accountable and focused. Without a solid management system, even the most well-thought-out goals can fail. Management systems, such as setting clear OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) and tracking progress through regular reviews, are essential in ensuring that our aspirations translate into actionable outcomes. By establishing measurable milestones, we can assess our progress over time and make adjustments as needed. This system not only holds us accountable but also allows us to celebrate small wins along the way, which keeps motivation high.

When we fail to align our goals with a clear purpose, a robust strategy, and a management system, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Goals that are not tied to a “why” or purpose often lack the motivation needed to see them through. Without a clear roadmap and measurable outcomes, it’s easy to lose focus or abandon the effort altogether. The difference between success and failure in 2025 will not be determined by the goals we set but by how we approach those goals. By managing the present, selectively forgetting the past, and creating the future with a winning strategy, we can turn our aspirations into achievements that are aligned with our deepest values and purpose.
