The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed its national convention for February 2022.
Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu disclosed this to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Bagudu was accompanied by the APC caretaker committee chairman, Mai Mala Buni and the governor of Jigawa State, Abubakar Badaru.
The development came after months of pressure and petitions against the Mai Mala Buni-led committee over its delay in putting modalities in place for the convention.
APC in June, 2020, dissolved its National Working Committee (NWC) and put in place a caretaker which was mandated to resolve all crises rocking the party to paved the way for a national convention.
The committee was given a timeline of six months to conclude it’s assignment.
The tenure of the committee’s was extended in June 2021 after consideration of the progress report, the schedule of outstanding activities with regard to congresses and national convention.
Following months of pressure on the committee, governors elected on the party’s platform met on Sunday to discuss the way forward.
The outcome of the meeting which held at the Kebbi State Governor’s lodge in Abuja was not public until the Aso Villa visit by Bagudu and others.
He said: “Yesterday, Nov. 21, the Progressive Governors’ Forum met, where we congratulated and thanked the Caretaker Committee for working so hard in leading the party.
We also thanked the President for supporting them to deliver on their mandate.
“I also explained yesterday that the Progressive Governors’ Forum discussed the issue of national convention of the party and they mandated us to come and discuss with the President as the party’s leader to give the input of the Governors so that the party and the President will consider.
“Part of the inputs we got yesterday was that we still have four states which are in the process of completing their congresses like Anambra; understandably because of the recent gubernatorial election, Zamfara and two others, because of logistic challenges and then, Christmas is around the corner and early January we will be very busy with Ekiti.
“So, the Governors, based on all these, suggested the party and the President should graciously consider February and the President is favourably disposed to the suggestion.”
