Despite pleading guilty before the court on Naira abuse accusation labeled against her, famous Kano Tiktoker Murja Ibrahim Kunya case wasn’t decided as expected as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to secure conviction and sentence of the Tiktoker who was accused of dancing on naira notes amounting to 400,000 naira.
The EFCC had in Suit number FHC/KN/CS/18/2025 arraigned Kunya at the federal high court in March with a one count charge of naira Abuse contrary to the CBN act.
EFCC taskforce investigated a video showing Murya dancing on ₦500 and ₦1000 notes totaling ₦400,000 at a Hotel in Kano state early this year.
Murja pleaded guilty to the charge, however, while reviewing the facts of the case on Tuesday, EFCC counsel Lily Jacobs tendered the videos retrieved from as evidence and begged the court to convict and sentence Murja having pleaded guilty.
Justice Simon Amobeda cited sections 274(1b) and 356 of the Administration of criminal justice act ACJA and asked the prosecution of the whereabouts of the ₦400,000 which ought to have also been tendered as exhibit and forfeited to the federal government.
The judge held that he has responsibility to protect both the EFCC and the defendant in the eyes of the law, averring that the material fact presented in the case is not complete.
While noting that Murja has not jumper bail in Ramadan when she was arraigned, the judge held that the defendant should continue to enjoy her bail in the custody of her lawyer Abubakar Saka with an undertaking to produce her in court at the next adjourned date of May 13 2025 set for conviction and sentencing.
