The House of Representatives Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, standing trial for alleged culpable homicide has been granted N500 million bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Monday.
Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunusa gave the bail with the condition that the suspect must provide two sureties, one of which shall be a first-class traditional ruler, while the other must be a permanent secretary at the federal or state civil service.
According to Justice Yunusa, Doguwa must deposit his travel documents with the court registry, which can be released upon request if needed for travel. The documents must be resubmitted upon return from the journey.
The judge also banned the lawmaker from visiting his constituency during the forthcoming gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections.
It would be recalled that a senior magistrate court in Kano had remanded Alhassan Ado Doguwa till Tuesday, March 7, 2023 over charges bordering on culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearm, mischief by fire and inciting public disturbance.
However, in an exparte application for the enforcement of the rights of Alhassan Ado Doguwa moved by Barrister Nuraini Jimoh (SAN), the counsel urged the court to release the accused on bail.
Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Yola of Chief Magistrate of Court 54, Nomansland, on March 1 ordered the remand of Doguwa, and others in Gorundutse Correctional Centre for alleged culpable homicide and other criminal offences.
The prosecutor, Aisha Salisu, told the court that the defendants were being charged with criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief use of firearms and inciting disturbance.
