Many houses have been set ablaze by the ISWAP-backed Boko Haram group during an attack on Damasak, a town in Borno state, along the border with Republic of Niger.
A military source said the attack took place Wednesday morning, but the terrorists met stiff resistance from the military.
He said the insurgents shot sporadically when they arrived in the town and set several houses on fire.
The source said he could not confirm the number of casualties, but said the troops have taken control of the town after the fierce gun battle.
21st Century Chronicle reports that the insurgents had on Saturday attacked Damasak, killing one soldier and three other persons. They also burnt buildings belonging to some humanitarian organisations, including that of the United Nations, during the attack.
