A prominent law educationist, Professor Kharisu Sufyan Chukkol of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is dead.
The Nigeria Lawyer Journal, quoting family sources, announced the professor’s demise on Sunday in Abuja.
He was 79.
A funeral prayer of the late academic would be held at the National Mosque Abuja at 1 pm. At the same time, his remains would be laid to rest according to Islamic rites at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja.
A native of Mayo Belwa in Adamawa State, Professor Chukkol dedicated his professional life to teaching and advancing law at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. He specialised in criminal law.
He held various positions at ABU, including Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of the Institute of Administration.
According to the faculty page on the university’s website, he was Dean, Faculty of Law, ABU from 1989 to 1990 and also from 1997 to 2001.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, paid tribute the late professor on his Facebook page, saying: “I’m saddened by the news of the passing of my teacher and mentor, the erudite Professor of Criminal Law at ABU, Prof Kharisu Chukkol.
“Prof Chukkol was an impactful lecturer who shaped our youthful years as young students. When I returned to ABU later in my career, he also supervised my LLM Dissertation. May Allah repose his soul, amen.”
On Facebook, A.B.U. Zaria Online wrote: “The #Abusite family mourns the death of legendary Prof. K. S. Chukkol. He was an ICON of law and one of the foremost Criminal Law experts in Nigeria who has trained countless number of Professors, Senior Judges, Senior Advocates of Nigeria etc. He died today in Abuja after a protracted illness.
