The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria remained one of Nigeria’s leading contributors to sports development through talent discovery, leadership training, and institutional excellence.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, disclosed this in a statement by the university’s spokesperson, Malam Auwalu Umar, on Sunday in Zaria.

Prof. Ahmed stated this during a courtesy visit by a university delegation to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, at the weekend.

The VC said “beyond producing outstanding athletes, ABU has consistently nurtured administrators and professionals whose contributions have shaped sports governance, policy, and institutional growth across Nigeria,” he said.

The vice chancellor said universities must remain central to Nigeria’s sports development agenda by producing skilled professionals who could drive innovation, strengthen governance, improve administration, and expand business opportunities in the industry.

He said ABU regards its designation as one of Nigeria’s six Sports Centres of Excellence and its hosting rights for the 2028 Nigerian University Games as responsibilities that demand excellence, accountability, and partnership.

Ahmed assured the commission that the university would work closely with the NSC to deliver both assignments successfully, in line with Dikko’s vision for a modern, professionally managed, and economically viable sports sector.

He said: “Nigeria’s future sporting success depends not only on producing champions but also on developing globally competitive professionals in sports administration, governance, finance, marketing, technology, and other specialised fields.”

The V C reaffirmed ABU’s commitment to supporting the commission’s reform agenda, while assuring Dikko that the university was ready to contribute its expertise, research capacity, and institutional strength to advance sports development nationwide.

The VC commended Dikko, for leading reforms that were transforming Nigeria’s sports sector into a sustainable driver of national development.

Ahmed described Dikko’s appointment as NSC Chairman as a proud moment for ABU.

He called Dikko a distinguished alumnus whose emergence at the helm of the nation’s apex sports regulatory body reflected the university’s tradition of producing leaders known for competence, integrity, professionalism, and service to the nation.

The vice-chancellor said: “The university fully aligns with Dikko’s vision of repositioning sports beyond recreation and competition into a thriving industry that creates jobs, attracts investment, and supports Nigeria’s economic growth.”

He said the achievements recorded by the commission under Dikko’s leadership had inspired confidence.

He praised Dikko’s courage, strategic direction, and commitment to reforms in sports administration, governance, infrastructure, and institutional development.

According to Ahmed, Dikko has, for over two decades, provided visionary leadership in the sports industry, adding that he had championed reforms in governance, infrastructure, administration, and sports business while mentoring future professionals nationwide.

The VC said Dikko’s remarkable journey continued to inspire ABU students, proving that competence, integrity, dedication, and hard work remained essential for excellence and national development.

Ahmed said Dikko’s achievements reflected ABU’s rich sporting heritage, noting that the university had.

In his response, the NSC Chairman described ABU as a strategic partner whose contributions would strengthen ongoing reforms and accelerate growth in Nigeria’s sports sector.

Dikko pledged sustained collaboration with the university to deepen sports development, strengthen institutional partnerships, and unlock the vast economic potential of Nigeria’s growing sports industry.
