One Fatima Bala, a volunteer operative with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, was among the nine persons who allegedly lost their lives during a stampede in Sokoto state on Thursday.
The stampede allegedly occured at the Gawon Nama residence of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko during a sallah palliative distribution Thursday’s night.
A senior officer at the Command headquarters of NSCDC in Sokoto who didn’t want his name on the print confirmed her death to 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE.
“Yes we lost a volunteer officer, Fatima Bala attached to our Gawon Nama office in the stampede.
“She died while trying to save a child during the unfortunate incident.
“Our investigation revealed that, nine people lost their lives and several others sustained various degrees of injuries,” he said.
Further checks revealed that the injured persons were rushed to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital which was just few meters away from the senator’s residence.
There were others who were receiving treatment at the Sokoto Specialist Hospital.
Another source revealed that bodies of the deceased were deposited in the morgues.
However, the spokesperson of the Sokoto Police Command, ASP Ahmed Rufa’i, had declined to comment on the matter when contacted by our reporter.
