Muslims in Saudi Arabia will begin Ramadan fasting following the sighting of the crescent on Sunday.
The moon was reportedly seen on Sunday evening, making March 11 the first day of the month of Ramadan .
Ramadan, determined by the lunar Islamic calendar in which months span either 29 or 30 days, begins and concludes based on the sighting of the crescent moon.
Saudi Arabia authorities had earlier asked Muslims to search for the crescent of the holy month of Ramadan.
The Supreme Court told whoever sighted the crescent to notify the nearest court and register their observation.
Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, Oman and Brunei have announced March 12 as the beginning of Ramadan.
