The Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Similanayi Fubara, Edision Ehie, has resigned as Speaker and member of the Assembly representing Ahaoda East Constituency 2.
Ehie, who announced his resignation in a letter dated December 29, 2023, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not give the reason for his resignation.
He only thanked his colleagues for a good working relationship and his constituency for supporting him throughout his stay in the Assembly.
The former speaker was the majority leader of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly until he was suspended by the House following the failed impeachment process initiated against Fubara.
Soon after his suspension Ehie declared himself as the factional speaker of the Assembly with four members on his side.
Governor Fubara had presented the State’s 2024 appropriation bill to four members of the Assembly under Ehie as speaker.
In the peak of the political crisis between Fubara, his predecessor, and Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Tinubu brokered the resolution during a meeting attended by other stakeholders.
Part of the resolution was that Ehie should make way for pro-Wike Speaker, Martins Amaehwule.
