The Kano State Video Censorship Board has revealed that it has imposed a two-year ban on a Kannywood actor, Abdul Sahir, popularly known in the entertainment industry as Malam Ali Kwana Casain, for allegedly sharing indecent contents on his social media handles.
Speaking to newsmen in Kano on the reasons behind the actor’s ban, Kano state censorship board’s chairman, Abba El-Mustapha, stated that the decision to ban the actor followed a series of allegations against the actor that he was posting explicit videos on his social media handles.
The board chairman explained that the board had extended an invitation to the actor to defend himself against the accusations, but the actor declined the invitation, forcing the board to take action against the actor by imposing a two year ban on him.
“Abdul Sahir refusal to appear before the commission at the scheduled time is a direct indication that he had committed the allegations labeled against him and also an attempt to undermine the state’s core values of which the board is set to protect,” said El-Mustapha.
El-Mustapha also warned film producers to refrain from casting the actor in their productions during the two-year ban, adding producers who have already featured the actor in their projects but were yet to release the films to submit the films for censoring within two weeks adding that failure to comply with the directive within the stipulated time frame would be with stiff consequences.
However, in a local radio station’s interview, the banned actor said the action taken against him was unfair claiming that the said video on which he was banned wasn’t thoroughly scrutinized and evaluated.
According to him, when he received the news of his banning he called and texted the board chairman severally but didn’t receive any response. The banned actor also vowed to preserve the said videos for all to go and see and make judgment by themselves.
However, he said he couldn’t honour the agency’s invitation because he was admitted at the hospital a day before the scheduled meeting.
