The Benue State University (BSU) has suspended all medical students from 200 to 600 levels of the College of Health Sciences with effect from Monday.
The university has ordered the affected students to vacate the school before 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
Also suspended was the University’s Medical Association (BESUMA) with immediate effect till further notice.
The suspension was contained in an Inter-Office Memo signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Mfaga Modom, who said the students are to resume on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
The students had demonstrated on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, over what they described as the arbitrary withdrawal of their classmates, water scarcity, and the lumping of five students instead of two in a hostel room.
An action the management of the school described as recalcitrant.
The memo also said the university would set up a committee to investigate why the students demonstrated and directed the top management committee of the College to implement the resolutions of the reports of the various committees on the demonstration.
The statement noted that the academic activities of the 100-level students of the College are not affected by the memo.
Dr. Modom, in the memo titled: Suspension of 200-600 Level Medical Student of the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi, said the measures were sequel to a review of the reports from the Dean of Students, the Coordinator of Security and Resolutions from the meeting between the Management Committee and the Academic Staff over the students’ demonstration.
